Building Alternative Communities & Art Spaces

31 March 2023, 19:30

Hillevliet 90, 3rd Floor

We invited our friend and filmmaker Edwin Mingard to speak about building communities. His work stands at the intersection of film and social change. The films are made with those that are often pushed to the margins, that go unheard. In his work people are not just subjects, they are co-authors as they use the camera and the medium as a way to tell their stories, while the filmmaker acts as a facilitator or a platform.

Several years ago Edwin opened the Deptford cinema in London, which has not only served as a space for art but also as a place to gather, meet and celebrate. The cinema is run on a volunteer basis and it has been an important place for those in the neighbourhood of Deptford.

Edwin runs multiple workshops with emerging artists as well as teenagers on documentary and experimental filmmaking as well as analogue photography.

Edwin Mingard is an artist and filmmaker based in London. He was the winner of a Jury Special Mention at IDFA (2020), was selected as a Bloomberg New Contemporary (2020), was longlisted for the Aesthetica Art Prize (2021) and is a Film London Lodestar (2022). His latest film, H Is For Hostile Environment, was premiered by Chisenhale Gallery in 2022 and is currently in festivals. He is currently developing a new feature length film.

A screening of Edwin's films will be held on Wednesday March 29th at WORM. Click here for more info and tickets.
